Overview of the Position: Under the supervision of the Training Officer/Manager, the Language and Culture Facilitator (LCF) is responsible for teaching communicative language skills and building intercultural competence among CorpsAfrica Exchange Volunteers (who are serving in Ghana from other African countries). The LCF works closely with the group of Exchange Volunteers, conducting language and cross-cultural classes within the CorpsAfrica competency-based curriculum framework, effectively using a variety of language training techniques, methodologies and activities. The LCF is responsible for the implementation and monitoring of daily language classes, as well as the community assignments of the Volunteers. In addition to language and culture classes, the LCF supports Exchange Volunteers in their homestay by facilitating communication and trouble-shooting problems with both Exchange Volunteers and their homestay families. The LCF acts as a resource person and provides feedback in the evaluation of Exchange Volunteers’ progress and performance towards meeting training competencies.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES
Language Training
  • Based on the Pre-Service Training language curriculum, develop daily lesson plans to ensure that Exchange Volunteers meet learning competencies
  • Facilitate regular language and cultural training sessions (virtually and in-person) for Exchange Volunteers using adult education principles and participatory training methodologies and based on acquisition of specific language competencies that incorporate language, cultural, safety/security and technical language objectives
  • Ensure excellent preparation and self-readiness before going to class and integrate all components in the content of lessons
  • Identify specific training techniques that corresponds with the Exchange Volunteers’ learning styles and remain open-minded and flexible to the content of the program
  • Foster self-directed learning techniques in all lessons and activities and guide Exchange Volunteers in managing their own self-study program
  • Regularly ask for feedback from Exchange Volunteers on language classes and learning progress and incorporate their feedback and suggestions to ensure quality language and cultural classes
  • Be available outside classroom hours to assist with additional language, culture, and community activities including one-on-one tutoring sessions and other learning options
  • Provide timely and regular feedback to Exchange Volunteers about their progress in language acquisition, cultural adjustment and behavioral performance
  • Assess Exchange Volunteers’ language progress regularly and provide feedback
  • Conduct Language Proficiency Interviews to check on the Exchange Volunteers' progress during Pre-Service Training
 Community Guide
  • Serve as a cultural guide, modeling the values and practices and traditions of Ghana
  • Represent CorpsAfrica in the community and facilitate respectful interaction with appropriate local authorities 
  • Support Exchange Volunteers’ community and practicum activities by ensuring time in the training schedule to perform those activities
  • Guide Exchange Volunteers through community activities, helping them to develop the appropriate language, cultural, and community knowledge to complete the tasks 
  • Build the independence, confidence, and skills for Exchange Volunteers to identify community members, build relationships, and complete community tasks to ensure success in future sites
  • Develop Exchange Volunteers’ intercultural skills by acting as a language and cultural information resource and guide 
  • Encourage Exchange Volunteers to practice the target language in the community and seek answers to their own questions in the community
  • Act as interpreter and translator, as needed
Homestay Family Support
  • Work with staff to identify homestay families for Exchange Volunteers
  • Assist in a smooth transition of Exchange Volunteers to new homestay families and facilitate communication between Exchange Volunteers and homestay families as needed
  • Explain the host family program to the host families including their role in helping with the Exchange Volunteers’ acquisition of language and culture
  • Schedule regular visits to homestay families to monitor Exchange Volunteers’ adjustment, cultural interactions, and homestay family engagement
  • Communicate regularly with CorpsAfrica Training Team/Staff on progress of Exchange Volunteers and their homestays, ensuring the success of the homestay program and the wellbeing of the Exchange Volunteers
Training Support
  • Participate in the Training of Trainer (TOT) sessions and activities prior to Pre-Service Training, including a general TOT with all staff as well as a LCF TOT, during which the team will prepare the strategy and scope of the language and culture training program 
  • Participate in Pre-Service Training meetings and contribute language, culture, community, and homestay ideas to assist with planning–as well as feedback and comments on Exchange Volunteers’ performance, behavior, and adjustment
  • Provide feedback and recommendations for training improvements and staff development
  • Assist in the compilation, documentation, and storage of language and culture training materials
  • Support training logistics as needed
  • Present cross and intercultural sessions to the Exchange and local Volunteers during the PST as needed
Safety & Security Support
  • Address safety and security proactively by ensuring appropriate homestay assignments for Exchange Volunteers and adhering to CorpsAfrica policies and procedures
  • Identify and communicate Exchange Volunteer safety and security concerns or issues to the Training Officer and Country Director
  • Knowledgeable and supportive of CorpsAfrica safety and security policies and procedures, including the timely reporting of suspicious incidents, persons or articles Other
  • Serve as a role model and moral support for Exchange Volunteers
  • Be responsible for monitoring own progress and performance as a trainer and community/cultural guide 
  • Maintain a professional and positive public image and observe professional code of ethics in regard to Exchange Volunteers, Local Volunteers, staff and the community
  • Respect confidentiality of sensitive information, dress appropriately and come prepared to all meetings
  • Perform other duties and tasks as assigned or required to support the mission of CorpsAfrica 
Other 
  • Serve as a role model and moral support for Exchange Volunteers

Qualifications:
  • A background in Language Education/Training with a minimum of three years of experience in planning and facilitating language trainings in the Fante language
  • Knowledgeable and experienced in adult learning practices and participatory training 
  • A passion for and commitment to youth leadership and community-led development
  • Extremely organized, detail-oriented, punctual, and results-oriented
  • Demonstrated initiative, adaptability, integrity, and judgment
  • Ability to learn quickly and work well with a wide variety of people, acting with diplomacy and tact with staff, Volunteers, community members and local authorities 
  • Excellent professional speaking, writing, and presentation skills in English
  • Excellent computer skills (email, calendar, and Google Workspace Tools (Docs, Sheets, Slides, etc.). 
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to work nights or weekends when necessary
